What is taping?

Taping is a method of applying a special elasticized tape to the skin to treat injuries and pain. The tape used for this treatment has unique properties that make it ideal for people recovering from injuries.

It stretches to up to 140% of its starting length as needed, but it also retracts fully to its original position without stretching out. This allows you to remain active while you’re recovering without being held back by a heavy or clunky apparatus. It’s latex-free and is safe for nearly everyone to use.

Who needs taping?

The Back To You Osteopractic Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation specialists might recommend taping as part of your physical therapy program if you have an injury like tendonitis, a ligament sprain, a muscle strain, or a partial dislocation.

How does taping work?

During a taping session, your osteopractor places strips of tape in specific configurations to support your muscles, tendons, and joints. There are many different ways to use taping during recovery, so the Back To You Osteopractic Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation specialists use specific methods based on your type of injury, its location, and your symptoms.

The tape contains a heat-sensing adhesive. Once the tape’s properly positioned, your osteopractor lightly massages it to activate the adhesive and secure the tape in place. After that, you’ll continue with your physical therapy program and normal daily routine while wearing the tape.

The tape lasts for several days, and you can wear it while showering. It dries out after 5-10 minutes.

What are the benefits of taping?

Taping is a completely noninvasive treatment approach that can offer benefits including:

  • Relieves pain
  • Adds support
  • Improves stability
  • Reduces swelling
  • Reduces scarring
  • Improves mobility
  • Improves range of motion

One of the biggest benefits of taping is that it improves your comfort, range of motion, and flexibility enough to help you participate actively in your rehabilitation. Ultimately, this allows for a faster recovery and return to normal activities.

Taping also combines with other noninvasive physical therapy treatments well. For example, your rehab program might include spinal adjustments, massage therapy, electrical stimulation, or other approaches too.
